Boy Scouts of America

100 Year Celebration

In February 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate 100 years as an organization. Founded as an outlet to prepare every eligible youth in America to become a participating citizen and leader, BSA has more than fulfilled its mission. Today, as we celebrate our first 100 years, we not only reflect on our rich history, but lay the foundation for a strong future, as well.

National Scout Jamboree:  July 26, 2010

The national Scout jamboree is a gathering, or jamboree of thousands of members of the Boy Scouts of America, usually held every four years and organized by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Referred to as "the Jamboree", "Jambo", or NSJ, Scouts from all over the nation and world have the opportunity to attend. They are considered to be one of several unique experiences that the Boy Scouts of America offers.

Nestled in the rolling green hills of Virginia, close to our nation’s capital, Fort A.P. Hill lies near many historical Civil War landmarks. This 76,000-acre facility has hosted the national Scout jamboree since 1981. The Boy Scouts of America uses approximately 3,000 acres of land to support a city of more than 43,000 Scouts and leaders.

Philmont Expedition 2011:  June 9 - Aug 9, 2011

Philmont Expedition 2011
Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America's premier High Adventure™ base, challenges Scouts and Venturers with more than 214 square miles of rugged northern New Mexico wilderness. Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country.

BACKPACKING EXPEDITIONS - Participants on backpacking expeditions hike through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Philmont Scout Ranch, ranging in elevation from 6,600 feet at Headquarters to 12,441 feet at the top of Baldy Mountain. Fascinating backcountry programs and more than 350 miles of challenging trails await those who seek to discover the wonder of Scouting’s Paradise as over 880,000 Scouts, Venturers and leaders have since 1939.

The Wilderness Pledge

As we spend time outdoors, it's good to remind ourselves that Scouts obey the Wilderness Pledge whenever they are hiking, camping, or on other activities away from the meeting place. You should be familiar with the Wilderness Pledge. It says, "Through good camping and hiking practices, I pledge myself to preserve the beauty and splendor of Americas' wilderness, primitive and backcountry areas. I commit myself to:
  • Set a personal example in following the Outdoor Code.
  • Train those I lead in the skills and attitudes needed to protect and preserve wilderness for future generations.
  • Assure that parties of which I am a part observe the camping and hiking standards that will leave no trace of our passing. "
It seems to me that what it boils down to is that in the Wilderness Pledge we commit ourselves as Scouts not only to preserve the environment but to make it better. For example, not only don't we leave litter ourselves, we pick up other peoples litter. And we not only build safe fires, we try to make sure that others do, too. In other words we take responsibility as Scouts to do whatever we can to keep America beautiful.
That may seem like a tall order. Nobody enjoys picking up other peoples litter. It's a lot easier to just say, "Boy, what a mess!" and pass it by. But that's not the Scouting way.
On all our hikes and campouts, let's leave the land better than we found it. That's Scouting's way.
